Reptile and Amphibian Species Reviews

Here we will provide several reptile and amphibian species reviews, including helpful hints and tips regarding the type of pets they make, their requirements, and where to purchase online.
Reptiles

Savannah Monitors (Varanus exanthematicus)
These African monitors attain sizes of 2.5 to 3.5 feet, and are very heavy-bodied. They are known for their ability to become "dog tame" over time, as well as their incredible appetites. Truly impressive lizards, they do well on a diet of large crickets, superworms, roaches, thawed mice, and the occasional fruit or vegetable. They have fairly short tails when compared to their body size. Here are some savannah monitors for sale from a reputable online reptile seller.

Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps)
Arguably one of the single most popular pet lizards in the world, Bearded dragons have earned their reputation. Not only do they have a prehistoric appearance, but they are known as some of the most tame lizards on the planet. They are omnivorous, meaning they consume both plant and animals matter, making feeding them a relatively easy process. Here are some bearded dragons for sale from a reputable online reptile seller.

New Caledonian Giant Gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus)
Reaching total lengths of up to 14-inches, these are the largest geckos in the world. Their tail is short, their skin is loose, and they can make noises. They can survive for up to 20 years, making them quite long-lived. Their diet is made up of insects, fruits, and some vegetables, making them fairly easy to care for in captivity. Some will accept pinkie mice, although they should be offered only occasionally as their diet should not be overly rich in protein or fat. There is only one place you should consider buying these from, and that's Phillipe de Vosjoli. You can find his New Caledonian Geckos for sale at his wonderful website.

Frilled Dragon (Chlamydosaurus kingii)
Perhaps one of the most recognizable lizards in the world, frilled dragons attain a total length of up to three-feet. Their most impressive physical feature is their amazing frilled necks. When attempting to intimidate another reptile, their neck skin expands to make them look deceptively large--it's an amazing site. They are omnivorous, and come from Australia and New Guinea. In addition, they are relatively easy to breed, and can become very tame in captivity. Here are some frilled dragons for sale from a reputable online reptile seller.

Ball Pythons (Python regius)
This species has become perhaps the most popular of all pet snakes. Their relatively small size (adults reach 3 to 5 feet in length), ease of care, and handleability are definitely contributing factors. Their bodies are thick, not slim like the common Garter snake. Another huge advantage these snakes have is the relative ease in which they can be bred to create new "morphs," which is another way of saying new colors, patterns, and sizes. If there was any negative, it's that they can at times be tough to get to feed when they are babies. Try to buy captive bred when possible, as they are imported in huge numbers, but also bred in huge numbers. you can find some Ball Pythons for sale from a reputable online reptile seller.

Plated Lizards (Gerrhosaurus sp.)
These unique-looking lizards are commonly imported from Africa and are a favorite amongst reptile hobbyists. Why? Because they are known for having docile demeanors, with some easily becoming "dog tame" as they say. It's a shame there aren't any captive breeding programs in the works, as these are fantastic lizards that make excellent pet reptiles. They are inexpensive (one reason they aren't focused on by breeders) and lay just two eggs per clutch (another reason breeders don't focus on them). They are omnivores, and will readily consume both insects and fruits or vegetables. Some advocate the use of wet dog food, but we don't recommend it for dietary reasons. Plated lizards love to dig, so a deeper substrate is always appreciated. Here are some plated lizards for sale from a reputable online reptile seller.

Leopard Geckos (Eublepharis macularis)
These colorful geckos have become a household name within the reptile industry due to their beautiful coloration, calm demeanor, and ease of both care and breeding. They are primarily insectivores, but will accept just about anything that moves, including minnows. Keeping these geckos is a breeze, as they do not need a basking spot (like most geckos, they're nocturnal). Despite being nocturnal, they are quite active during the day in captivity. Breeding them simply involves keeping a male and female together--it's basically that easy. They can lay several small clutches of eggs per year. These geckos are very slow, which makes handling them very easy. Here you can find several types of leopard gecko for sale online.

Day Geckos (Phelsuma)
These are the beautiful, brightly colored geckos you've probably seen on nature shows. They generally come from Madagascar, but do live in several other countries. They are rarely captive bred. They vary greatly in size, from just a few inches, to around 10 inches. They are insectivores and will also consume nectar-based foods such as honey. Like most geckos, they do not appreciate being handled. So, in other words, they make excellent display animals. Here is a great site with Day geckos for sale.

Green Iguana (Iguana iguana)
Green iguanas can become quite tame in captivity, and that's great, but what most reptile hobbyists don't realize is how large they can become. How large? Six-feet in total length. So, if you've got the room, green iguanas can make a most impressive pet reptile. They are omnivores, but fruits and vegetables should definitely make up the bulk of their diet. As babies and juveniles, insects can make up a larger portion of their diet. Always remember to use a quality calcium supplement such as Miner-all or Rep-cal.
