Below we explain the pros and cons of each type of reptile and amphibian feeder, and provide links to purchase them from preferred online sellers including SaulFishFarm.com, BackwaterReptiles.com, UncleJimsWormFarm.com, AquariumFish.net, and FlyCafe.net, among others.
Crickets
- Crickets have stood the test of time as an excellent reptile and amphibian feeder insect. The problem arises with continually purchasing them from local pet stores. The easy answer is ordering them online, as you save a considerable amount of money when you buy them in bulk (usually in quantities of 250, 500 or 1,000). You can buy crickets for sale online, then simply keep them in a regular plastic bin and feed them spare fruits and vegetables while you feed them to your reptiles or amphibians. They should last for weeks.Mealworms - These feeders are another common reptile food staple, but they're not quite as nutritious as crickets. The good news: they are really easy to care for, can be easily bred, and will last for weeks while you feed your animals. You can buy mealworms for sale online, usually in quantities of 500 or 1,000.
Fruit Flies - These are very small flies that have somewhat recently been bred to be flightless, which makes them really ideal feeders for very small reptiles and amphibians. You can buy fruit flies for sale online, and rear them in the pre-packaged cups that they arrive in.
Earthworms - Excellent feeders for any animals who will consume them, including newts, salamanders, turtles, frogs, toads, lizards, and small snakes. Full of protein and minerals, they are nutritious, and are ravenously consumed by most amphibians and aquatic turtles. Easily kept, easily bred, they are ideal in many ways. Always buy your earthworms for sale online, and never collect them from the wild as they can contain contaminants.
Roaches - There are quite a few feeder roach species available, but the absolute best in our opinion (and experience) are the dubia roaches. They don't stink, can't climb smooth surfaces, are nutritious, and last forever. We highly recommend them as reptile feeders for a variety of reasons. They can be easily bred every 24-29 days, and they love heat. You can buy dubia roaches for sale online, and just keep them in a plastic bin with some dog food and egg crate (or something similar for them to crawl on and hide in). If you add heat, they will breed and molt quickly.
Waxworms - These insects can be good for enticing reluctant reptile or amphibian feeders, such as newly imported animals. They will last several weeks when refrigerated, which is convenient, and can be bred quite easily. They turn into moths eventually, which can also be fed to your animals. You can buy waxworms for sale online, and keep them in the refrigerator for weeks. Terrestrial newts and salamanders really relish these worms.
Blackworms - If you have newts or other aquatic salamanders, live blackworms are a godsent. They last for weeks in the refrigerator, are very nutritious, and the newts are ravenous for them! If you have anything aquatic that doesn't want to eat, these should do the trick. The sad thing is, many newt owners don't even know these worms exist. We haven't found a reliable place to buy these worms online yet, but they are often available at local fish stores.
Goldfish - These commonly available fish are actually poor reptile food items, despite the notion that they are avidly accepted by many species of snake, lizard, frog, toad, turtle, newt, and salamander. While inexpensive, they are very fatty, and contain an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1. We recommend avoiding them, but if need be, you can buy goldfish for sale and keep them in an aquarium with an air bubbler.
Rosy Red Minnows - These fish are basically fathead minnows make excellent feeders for aquatic reptiles and amphibians. They aren't fatty like goldfish, tend not to carry disease, and are easy to breed. Plus, as an added bonus, they're nice to look at. You can buy minnows for sale online, and keep them in an aquarium with an air bubbler. No heating is necessary. Feed them a high quality fish food to gut load them.
